A Secret Best Kept
The sky was gray in an alabaster way The day she lost her man to another A girl with skin fair and long golden hair And blue eyes to make a weak man smother Well she swore at the air of this sordid affair And vowed to get even someway Then with a smile she thought of the banker awhile Decided she'd be his for a day That worked out for the banker no doubt But his wife saw it as a disaster Still she was never one to to be quiet and outdone So she went to bed with the postmaster Now The master's wife saw, too,an opportunity to woo The judge of the sixth district court So the dominoes fell and probably as well For the people here had been a boring sort The beds moved around all over the town As partners changed daily it seemed But business went on each morning at dawn What happened at night no one even dreamed Then one cloudy day in a drab sort of way The first player in this string moved on The girl with skin fair and long golden hair Caught the stage and moved to Tucson Well, that collapsed the spell and when night time fell Everyone in town was back in their own bed But you see smiles on the street as folks glance at their feet As this secret is best kept and not said. 3-28-19
