My Dog Prince
MY DOG PRINCE I once had a dog, his name was Prince I used to think he didn't have any sense He would just lay around waiting for a bone Didn't seem to move while I was gone But on Christmas day I hid just to see How lazy one old hound dog could possibly be He didn't know I was hidden from view Watching to see what he might do He got up slowly and started to roam And I thought to myself he won't leave home But to my surprise he trotted away Leaving me thinking that he would just stay Quietly I followed and to my surprise He headed to the home of the widow, Miss Wise She is an invalid who can barely walk at all Her slow shuffling gait causes her to fall Well Prince stopped and pawed at her kitchen door And I wondered what did he do that for The widow Wise opened it for him And my old dog, Prince, trotted right in Widow Wise had a harness that looked rather crude She placed it on Prince while he quietly stood They then went strolling down her treelined drive I never saw her seem so young and alive They went down the lane that led to the creek I hid in the bushes to take a peek The widow suddenly produced a fishing pole And cast it into this tiny water hole She caught a fish with every cast And soon an hour or so had passed She laid her fishing pole aside Gathered her catch and smiled in pride Prince very dutifully waited for her Patiently sitting and did not stir Widow Wise said to him, come on Prince And the dog that I thought had no sense Walked beside her back to her home This lazy old dog that I thought didn't roam Had done a kind deed to the Widow Wise And I witnessed this miracle with my own eyes So I treat Prince in conjuction with his name And my affection toward him is not the same As it was when I thought that he had no sense And I'm proud of this old hound dog named Prince 28 December 2018 for the contest Christmas Pets, sponsored by Dear Heart
