Secrets of the Sahara
Soft-bouncing thru a gentle desert breeze She rode secure atop the camel's back Like skirring swells on rolling Persian seas Connecting stars that winked in midnight black She tried to think on what was now ahead To shed those horrid thoughts of yesterdays A hidden slave to others and their bed Sold long before she knew of women's ways To live in that cruel world of twisted needs She often drowned her dreams of being free Yet through that life of furtive men and deeds The stars would sing to her of what might be And when her eyes had long since dried of tears Her broken spirit, cleaving at its crease She gathered all her earnings o'er the years And with her treasures, bought her own release Now 'cross the desert eventide she wandered True hope now blooming in those distant lands And tho' her pride and person had been squandered Those secrets, she'd left buried in the sands For ... As she strengthened from those hidden scars ... The darkest nights so birth ... the brightest stars. ~ 2nd Place ~ in the "Secret" Poetry Contest, Faraz Ajmal, Judge & Sponsor.
