My Childhood Dogs
She watches me grow till she got old and before I turned five Our family dog Sheba died I keep her memory inside and dream of how we played slept under the Elm for shade Distant it now seems she still wanders in my dreams How she licked my face with her big kiss giggles and barks always amiss Her big fluffy ears and long curved tail Her joyful bark like a happy yell She was my first childhood pal Even at five I cried and cried Under the Elm, she was laid to rest Then Zero became our puppy pest Zero was small, not tall with a stubby tail and short legs And was as messy as a baby pig He chewed what he wasn't supposed to chew and yelped and whined so it made you blue But he had big sorrowful eyes that melted your heart as you realized This puppy Zero was my new friend through boyhood years I cherished him In sadness, he was a comfort to me In joy my laughter he got out of me He followed me as I rode my bike cuddle next to me to sleep at night Played fetch like it would never go out of style Swing him around in the air as he bit on a towel Girls liked him with his sad eyes and cute face He kept chasing me even though I never lost a race After I went college bound In my bed, dead was Zero my parents found I came back to bury him The best of the best my little friend Other dogs I have owned and they made me smile But there is nothing like the bond between a dog and a child.
