Baby Sister's Secret
Baby Sister’s Secret Little baby sister begged her mother for sandals. She was only 3. She called them “shoes with holes in them.” Her little toes felt free. One morning the shoes with holes were gone, Mother couldn’t find them anywhere, Now the family was poor enough, To replace them was not in the air. All the family was upset but baby sister, She didn’t know what the commotion was about, She knew just where she left them, About then Mother gave a shout. She opened the ice box door to make supper, And there were the shoes with holes, Side by side, little pink socks peeking out. White with little leather soles. Why, oh, why, didn’t you tell us? Mother hysterically yelled. Why did you put them in the ice box, And then refuse to tell. Little sister twisted her mouth with her fingers, She said when I asked you what ice boxes do, You told me that’s where you keep things, So everything stays fresh and brand new. My Nancy remembered.
