Double Play - Part 2
(Continued from Double Play - Part 1) With glove on knee and fingered stitch the pitcher was so ready He threw the ball at Casey who like a rock was steady Casey thought he’d fool them all and moved his bat to bunt The prayers were truly needed, it was a foolish stunt “Horse-feathers” screamed the stricken folk, all in unison While the jaw dropped players on the bases just plain forgot to run The catcher’s foot stomped the plate then he shot the ball to third Time it froze, amidst the gasps “You’re out” “You’re out” was heard Casey dropped the bat, and stormed the path to first As stricken fans downed a beer this time it wasn’t thirst Casey knew he could atone for yesterday’s black sin If he beat the ball to the bag so he ran the race to win Neither printed word or young of mind recorded the winner’s name All we know is Ernie’s words live in the hall of fame And on that day, before the bleachers and ‘twix the powdered lime Mustached players with ball and bat gave birth to our pastime
