My Story, So Far
This has more similarities to a story than a poem. November 2010 - I was in second grade when I started feeling drowsy and weak. I would come home with unexplained bruises, and neither me nor my mom could come to a conclusion. I started turning pale earlier in the month (noticed by my mother). Then one night, like many others, I woke up to use the restroom just down the hall from my room, and that's when it happened. It was like I halfway blacked out, I couldn't see even though the light was on but I was conscious of what i was saying and what I heard. I called for my mom who was sleeping in her room down the hall. So she put a bucket in my room in case it happened again. The next night- I woke up again for the same reason, I was about to stand up and pee into the bucket, but it was like my legs just wouldn't work! I tumbled to the ground and once again called for my mom. She had to carry me to the car and rushed me to the nearest hospital (about 45 min away). This particular day was a Sunday so the staff working weren't as good as the people working during the week. As I said, I couldn't walk so my mom pushed me in a wheelchair. They misdiagnosed me with the flu. On my way out of the hospital, the person who is supposed to help people when they arrive, said "You don't need that wheelchair, he can walk." If I could have, I would've got up and beat him up on the spot, but I was only 7 years old, and I couldn't walk. Later that week- It happened again, I collapsed in my room. My mom, once again, brought me in to the hospital. This was later in the week, so the good staff were working. They drew some blood and looked at it under a microscope. They saw a spinal fluid in my blood, which isn't supposed to be there. They knew I had leukemia, however they didn't know which kind. They later found out it was T- cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. I, as a kid, thought it was a bad flu. I was admitted to the hospital and started my treatment. The doctors and nurses were very understanding of my mom's concerns. I was on antibiotics and many different fluid drugs. I woke up with sweat puddles in my bed because of all the fluid being injected into my body. There were many I had to get 14 transfusions of red blood cells and platelets. stages to my treatment, some more severe than others. I went through treatment for over 3 years and I still go for routine checkups every 4 months as of now. I am on my freshman year of high school and i feel like a normal kid. 11/21/17
