I Remember a Friend
I remember a friend I remember a dear friend, among a host; A friendship with which I could boast Among colleagues our friendship was the toast And our story is still told from coast to coast. I remember the excitement about your upcoming wedding It was 2009, and we had all hoped for a happy ending In October, to Abuja we were heading Suddenly you fell ill, and it led to the news all mortals are dreading. I remember how from 2009 to 2012, you suffered Taking every proposed remedy the physicians offered Strongly believing respite will come from each new solution being proffered In the end , it was your life that was smothered I remember our discussion in 2012, on May the thirteenth A day before you left - May the fourteenth The plans we made for our future generations , maybe up to the fifteenth And how you suddenly left, almost without a hint. We had talked for about three quarters of an hour About everything, including your beautiful flower And how she’d being with you all through, for almost every hour And in your voice, I had felt a new surge of faith and will power. You believed that you were healed That against every ailment, Jesus was your shield And we all, through prayers, your case had appealed Yet to the cancer, you finally did yield Your friends wished your life they could somehow extend But none had the power over his life, to lend So, we hope to meet you somewhere in the end For now, we say rest on in the lord dear friend
