Stranger
I was young when I fell in love With a blue eyed singer of songs. I had no talents to speak of, But she was a righter of wrongs. As each year came I became less In her thoughts and less in her life. I wasn't much and I confess There was no chance she'd be my wife. As in her songs, I went to war - I'd be a hero with medals. Maybe even earn the Big Star, And I'd come home to rose petals. I lie here now, my face in sand, With the tears running down my face. I am a stranger in this land - They aim to kill me in this place. I shiver with each tear that falls, And tells me life has soured. I found that when my duty calls, I have answered as a coward. No thoughts of love or blue eyed girls Can enter my brain past the fear. Bullets pass my head in swirls - All I can muster is a tear I hope to die a painless death, I'll take cowardice to the grave. I did not know with each deep breath That my life was not one to save. I was young when I fell in love - At the time I thought it was daft Now the bullets whine just above, I dried the tears, stood up and laughed. November 7, 2016 Foe Contest Creep
