Autumn Shadows
There are brief moments in the autumn sunset when strange and eerie shadows creep along the grass; it sets an indefinable color scheme of yellow green hues that peek a hidden fear of oncoming night. The sun slips in and out thru non clouds where only wisps of white webbing glimmer rays in the trees; it hovers high in the branches teasing birds to fly away then whispers into squirrel ears to gather leaves and nest. The rays blind the eyes but light winged insects float above the grassy knolls to dance in the fading light; it is dusk in the north east dropping earlier each evening. Distant trees change color from deep emerald green to an orangey yellow red as acorns tap the roof; it is a noisy task of pitter patter taps instigated by both birds and squirrel creatures prepping for winter cold soon to follow Indian summer Creeping in behind autumn shadows, the trees stand still and tall motionless skeletons at attention; dressed in full green regalia steady, unbending to the rising breeze, a wind slow to build set to tease a sleeping giant or two. Brittle leaves cling tight drained by hot summer's lack of rain, the end lies in sight too late for any fruited growth but trees still maintain a silent watch for the close of summer heat. The chill of Autumn falls waiting the snow of winter nights, another season passes counting the years to decades slipping into centuries long gone as the trees watch and wait in place and position for the unspoken autumn's of tomorrow.
