Sunset In Sandtown
Sunset in Sandtown The hard ball bearings of the skateboard cracked streets writing words all its own in silver streaks. Crack, smack went the boy, sailing in the Sandtown evening that touched tops of the Gilmor projects. Dodging in and out of traffic like a master, he ignored Sister's urgent homeward call. The skateboard, as if it had a mind to fly, came from under foot and leaped up flipping him to ground on his back to sky. Children’s play cries, suddenly drowned by a meeting of truck, boy and ground in a horrid life destroying broke open sound People stood as statues, frozen in time and place, then someone covered what was left of the boy's face. They ran and ran to Sister, screaming madwoman she became. "They don't know where his mother is," as they bagged his mortal remains. Just another day in Sandtown with another black boy down. 8/16/16
