Bedtime Stories
When our girls were but babes, the tales I spun, To help they feel safe as sleep overcome. If I came home with a bump or a scratch, It was because I'd had some fearsome match, With a Bear or a Lion , escaped from a zoo nearby, Listening in awe while I told my tale, they didn't cry. Then off to sleep they drifted, it never did fail, They never knew it was a made up tale. If you ask them of the stories I'm sure they will tell, Of the Dragon that flew right off my arm at night, To stay, keeping them safe 'til dawns early light. Now my grandson's as old as our daughters were, I can think up a tale to keep him from fear. I'll tell him of times when I walked home at night When a Tiger jumped out, giving me such a fright , But I fought him off quick before he took a bite, And the dragon with that firey flame came to harm, And I beat him and him stuck right here on my arm. The scratches and scars came from many a fight, But we'll save and talk of them another night. © Dave Timperley 03 July 2016
