Walking Amongst Titans
Years before today, I dreamed - of walking amongst titans. I pushed, and I ran, and I signed; I trained, and one day I got it. Today, and for many days before, I've walked amongst those titans - and I find them not only unequal to the title, but indeed far lesser. Soon, but never soon enough, that walk comes to an end. And I dream now of new titans, of a new walk - next to an old one. Many near me try to scare us, try yet to claim the title; saying that no others "outside" can live up to it, surely. Most ears don't heed their words, knowing the false bravado behind. Mine are already listening elsewhere, tuned to other words and other steps. A few days past I heard some I'd missed: the drum beat in the swing of a hammer, mirth exchanged between workers, instead of hatred; and "great job - thank you". I was dead wrong headed into this, and it's almost time for the remedy. A few more miles, and I can trade work boots for these worn marching ones. I already had my dream, already walked amongst the true titans - and to my shame never knew it. But I was one once, and will be again.
