Magic Spelled Out
Sitting passenger in an orange 57 Chevy pickup Sipping occasionally from a warming beer It’s going on to sunset and we’ve had a day The wives and kids are back at The Coop (his house) We’re in “The Pumpkin” with Biffer his soul mate Highland terrier He’s brought me to see Sump’n special We sit in silence. A miracle in itself The sound system in this truck is an example Of obsessive perfectionism. The windows as usual Are completely spotless, to the point of invisibility We are parked on Great Hill with its panoramic View of Boston Harbor “Any minute now Meek” he murmurs gazing avidly At the setting sun It sets and “The Aftermath” begins as usual This time of year it’s fantastic Boston never looked so good Then it happens. The streetlights come on. “Do you see the necklace” he asks? I smile and raise the bottle in salute No words are needed for some time The joy of seeing through someone else’s eyes We’ve been doing this to each other for years now Sharing magic competitively As only good friends can He caught more fish today But that’s another story
