Because I Blink
Crazy fun prodigy—from a distance A real sight to see, But here and near— Awkward, quiet, rubbing your hands together, stammering… Are you really sweating right now? Breathing through your teeth? As if a clamped jaw is going to create conversation…. You can’t even look me in the eye! But I’ve got the intensity of a spider identifying its dine I’m not going to drink you— I’m going to watch you squirm, Let you tug in all the wrong places You will look up eventually And when you do, You won’t be able to move anymore No— Not like you used to, With that confident saunter, And that free, jubilant chortle Those grand hand gestures, Wrapping all in your wing with locket fascination I don’t open empty, golden clasps I don’t weave for butterflies— I kill for silent moths! I see with multiple eyes those fading designs— You are not special like me Your blood is wasted on these strings How could one who is so used to the dark Be so attracted to this light? It’s in you, little moth Whether I adore you or not And because I blink BECAUSE I BLINK I guess I am letting you go tonight So flee—don’t be blind anymore Open those tiny eyes, And let those wings of yours take flight!
