Outside, In
As I sit at the top of your mountain, I can see all you have been. From your first words muttered with no one to hear, To last night when you held yourself and cried, When you were thinking that no one could see. I've seen inside your eyes the frightened child, Who is backing into the shadows of your mind, Hoping he hasn't been seen. More frightened of coming out that the shadows he's hidden in. I've seen the nightmare that is killing him. I hear the footsteps that climb the stairs. I see the man who's going to beat you again. As your bedroom door flies open, I can feel the fear rush through your body. I can feel the pain as you rush to protect your head. I stand by the kitchen table and watch you eat. I watch his lips as he tells you you're worth so little, I watch you believe you are worth less. I watch as you lean over the toilet, I see you try and extract his disease. As I watch you walk in desperation towards death, I can see your father come from his grave and take you by the hand. I can see his strength grow in you as he helps you carry on, His gentle kiss within your mind, Is where you find the need to carry on until tomorrow. Still however, I see you walking into your past, And I know that here you would like to hide, Because you know where you've been hurt so much, You cannot be hurt anymore.
