Autumn Leaves
By chance, I found them there, …they were lost by time, just like the leaves that fell away from autumn trees, and drifted past the window Now, here today they've come to stay, as if to say that love can last They were pressed between twin pages, waiting to be found Tucked inside, with brittle veins, in your tattered book of poems The cover's worn, a broken spine, that had your names, an autumn date I brushed the dust, and felt the rush that comes from winter's song Caressed in yellowed tissue, frayed, three leaves from ancient trees Had fallen down from russet crowns, one autumn long ago Where leaves had twirled so bold and gay, discarded to the ground You picked them up with gentle care, and pressed them, sonnet bound A place you walked and held his hand, and knew how love could be Perhaps beneath those golden trees you made your plans for me When winter's chill and stolen years had not yet come to be Fresh fragrance of the fall was new, when love was yours to find From carpets, soft of red and brown, you chose three leaves, now mine A legacy you've left for me, a treasure left behind You chose three leaves from all the hordes that lie upon the ground A tree had finished using them, in remembrance of you Yours for awhile, they made you smile, and now they've come to me Here in my hands, they've come to stay, to keep for all my days And as days pass, until at last my autumn leaves must fall.... __________________________________________________________ 5/11/16 Contest: Gren's Evergreen (Golden Oldies #2) Inspired by the song: "Autumn Leaves"
