A Story of Survival
He asked me if I'd like a drink I told him that I would He lived in a one room cabin Back yonder in the wood He poured three fingers in a cup Then poured himself one, too. Smiled an' said he made his livin' Peddlin' this pure home brew. I'd stumbled on this man named Jeb While roundin' up some strays He dang near shot my head clean off 'Fore I could have my says Once he saw I was a cowboy He got downright friendly He had a dog and a rooster - A hoss kinda spindly He had a pair of deep blue eyes And auburn hair that shone He told me his whole story then And why he lived alone He'd been here pushin' forty years A sheriff on his tail Said he ain't broke no law he knew - But he'd put him in jail He'd got close to the sheriff's wife When she was all alone She gave birth to a blue eyed boy With auburn hair that shone The brown eyed sheriff wasn't pleased An' oiled his forty five So Jeb ran here and built a still To try and stay alive So here he lives and here he'll stay 'Mongst the trees and the vines A prisoner of them deep blue eyes And auburn hair that shines April, 2016 Contest: Your Choice (7) Sponsor: Brian Strand
