Listen To the Warm
"It happens just because we need to want, and to be wanted too...when love is here or gone to lie down in the darkness and... listen to the warm.” -Rod McKuen My reflective moments of me and you rush through my mind tonight. Like crashing waves upon a sandy shore, your love warmly washes over me, making me want and need you more. No, it wasn't love at first sight. I struggled with falling in love at all. I didn't think I could love someone when I was still trying to love myself. But you...you said you loved me when our eyes first met. I hope you didn't regret that, or me for not knowing where my heart was trying to lead me. Your warm and gentle, "I love you," took me by surprise. Oh how you must have been hurt by the look on my face when I heard you whisper those words. You knew what you wanted; I only knew that the warmth and sincerity of your emotions left me chilled with fright.. desperate to catch my breath, I pulled away. I didn't know what I wanted, not at first. But being apart for days left me even colder. My want of you outweighed my fear, and soon our wants and needs blended together. It's been many years since I've thought about our wobbly start... well, my wobbly start that nearly kept us apart. When you took my hands in yours, you also took my heart. My love, thank you for bringing light to my darkness, for keeping a calm repose as we counted fingers and toes of our babes, and for teaching me to listen to the warmth. Through our laughter and tears, and for loving me all these years, you are the only love I've ever known in my life, so thank you, my darling, for wanting and needing me as your wife. I'm still listening to the warm ~ with want and need. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ April 17, 2016 Laura Loo's "Listen to the Warm" contest
