Simple Times
Simple Times Growing up poor; Was not something that caused me shame. I am fortunate; I was taught there is more to life to gain. For money can not buy; Peace, love, or serenity. It may buy many things; And cause greed and apathy. Being humble is not a crime; Being poor is not a sin. Living a simplistic life; Will bring you honest friends. Meager beginnings; Taught me more than any books. Sitting by the wood stove; Talking to Momma as she cooked. Reading by an oil lamp; On a cold winter night. Tales of legends and adventures; Enjoying the peace and the quiet. Hand-me-downs and hand-made clothes; Was a thing of pride and pleasure. Company on those back roads; Was something that we treasured. As I look back in memory; And recall my circumstance. Was I really all that poor; Or really blessed perchance. ~ Darlene Doll Smith
