A Child's Wish
I wish I had a train so I could be where I want to be I wish I had a train so I could see who I want to see Wish I could chug into eternity See lands beside a different sea Be more than I can ever be Oh, train, won’t you come to me. I wish I had a train so I could do what I want to do I wish I had one now so I could go everywhere with you I had a dream of a car for two A little bed and a table too With goodbyes we’re forever through Oh, please, pretty dream, come true. I wish I had a train with a bed for my teddy bear ‘Cause, Mommy, he could climb around and tangle up your hair He’ll need a table and a little chair But no dishes, ‘cause we can share Don’t think ol’ Teddy will care ‘Cause we’ll be happy way out there. I wish I had a train so I could go where I want to go I really wouldn’t care whether she goes fast or slow About the only thing I know I want to hear that whistle blow Go places that are far below Just tow through the heat and snow. I wish I had a train so I could fly to the distant stars Just like a little plane, we could sigh past Venus and Mars And we could see those big Centaurs Sit around and strum guitars, Or meet forgotten kings and tsars, Because all the sky is ours. I wish I had a train so I could stay up a little past ten I wish you would be there to read my bedtime stories again It could be just like way back then When you flicked me with an old black pen ‘Cause I threw pillows at my good friend Ben And you’d said, “Don’t do it again.” I wish I had a train so you could be with me every night ‘Cause I’d never be scared when you leave and turn out the light If I were always in your sight There’d never be cause for fright We’d never have to say “Goodnight” I’d just reach out and hold you tight.
