Light On the Devil's Chord - Day 9
“You play on my every weakness from my past, As a heart-wrenched spirit of truth caresses your comrades They are perturbed as you are by the magnificent light, To challenge your heart, is to render the fight…” A darkness all around growled its presence known As the silence of our Prince sensually seethed The cedars of my love arose from the black mist, A layered aroma nourishing all but his anger and treachery He smelled it as any ancient evil would He sensed it, reviled it, lamented it The cold voice hummed through his nostrils, Gathering what thoughts lay hidden, Boiling to burst into song Boiling to prove my purpose wrong “If only the churning of my silent night had lulled your mind Into the whirlpool lies you live by, sifting your spotlit grime, If only your sleep whispered its wrong, contentions pried your eye, Whether Time herself giggled in your silly plight to fool me with light, Or if our friend Anger dissipated the charms of your sight upright, You endure for the nothing, expecting everything to fold like a paper crane, On every rooftop, flapping its wings, to flatten and tame Your skin, though immortal, breaks in the thought of me winning, For each day you are to face the war you are beginning Mortality screams its name into your soul, You baffle your past self scraped in soot and coal, Rest cannot heal those lips that have sung these duets, Light cannot burst the darkness no matter how she shines or threats Humility is lost in the torment of every day, Can you not feel the danger’s sway? Can you bear to answer in your angelic way? Have you ever been trampled, disdained by the law? Crushing your willing petals that live in the wilt of flaw? Can you touch me, as you cry so softly in my arms, Rancid war…a scarlet-fevered dance to the voice of alarm Your confident arm swings dull weapons against the dark, Blind you never see your cage, you soft, singsong lark! Your lungs expanding to the air that is both rash and glad To anchor your pleasures on rough-raged lands Sharpen your blades upon me, woman, Harden your steel in the feel of wretched witness Make change double-take—let the paper cranes burn Allow your innards to yearn with nowhere else to turn! Cross the lands you study with wings strengthening against each wrong Remember even in my victory, unlike you I never belong Why is it clear that this evil will consume you? Why are you angering my heart to ruin you? How can you deliver this fight, When tepidly you challenge this eternity of night? I am your tool that shapes you even now Your lips quiver, and soon they shall press upon the weld And you will melt in the fires that breed your oddities Till your body hardens, changing in the strongheld violence of reason I shall hold you, for I have shaped you so lovingly, Edging each righteous curve to fantastic jagged-shined verve I will release you to burden all that cringe and judge in my sight, Crouched in their silly tombs of self-righteous light, Your love so gently lays upon this disgustingly alive display To add truth to the fights we deny within me” Holding me in his gaze, I stepped slowly upon the lines of his great circle, Saddened by the endlessness of possessing for power Crying inside, like a bridled lion, forced to face his death again, Again, and again…
