Love and Irony
Knee high to a grasshopper Not an ounce of grace In a split second he would swap her For a pretty face She asked him to play And drown a worm Not today, he would say As he'd fidget and squirm Swimming in the pond Flat as a board He couldn't see beyond The appearance, she ignored Years passed by As they tend to do The pond became dry Her visits were few Her Bags packed College bound He had slacked Stuck in town She would return When the moon was blue His stomach would churn This feeling was new The once ugly duck Now a swan Drove an old ford truck Too often gone a tough row to hoe All the boys knew it could cook, hunt and sew And he had blew it once freckled complexion Now a creamy tan Intent with direction No need for a man Determined to court Full of ambition Still a good sport Though she paid no attention More years passed by Her beauty faded The pond still dry He sat and waited There in the distance He saw a figure His body tense He couldn't be sure The blinding sun Delayed his sight Could it be the one To his delight Humbly aged Same sweet soul Just a different page For him to unfold Youth had passed Along with beauty Vanity in the past He could barely see She sat by his side And whispered in his ear I'll be your bride Though he couldn't hear He wore a grin And squeezed her hand Their time was thin But love was grand
