Lest We Forget Once More
10 million men sent to die, Not expected to return. Bullied into suicide, Sacrificed, in turn. A poppy for a measly 20p, Slapped on a dirty car bumper. Is this how we choose to thank, 10 million men dying in honour? Each man born and raised, With hopes, dreams and emotions. Each man with a family, Who loved and adored them. Each man now just a statistic That we teach our children. Each man now just a figure Somewhere near 10 million. 10 million mothers weeping, As they read that dreaded letter. 10 million fathers breaking down, Wishing they’d done things better. Once good men turned to killers, Just before their deaths. Robbed of their right to heaven, As they take their final breaths. Great poets like Wilfred Owen, Taken in their prime. Whilst those without a special gift, Forgotten, every time. Did you buy that poppy, To honour those who were smitten? Or did you buy it because, You knew you’d look bad if you didn't? Still think I'm being harsh? Well then, I dare you to remember. A victim without a special gift, Who’s not a family member. The war to end all wars, But when all is said and done, The truce was said to last for years, But only lasted twenty one. In the 2 minutes of silence You didn't think of those who died Instead of remembrance, How long was left was on your mind So take some time to think, Of each and every one. How about 20 million minutes of silence? 2 minutes for each man gone. Lest we forget. 28.7.1914 - 11.11.1918
