We Haven'T Forgotten - Unsung Heroes
Riding through the walls of my brain. A non-perfect symphony Slides through the edges of my hand. Did we forget? Sengbe Pieh: Bound by blood and sweat. Your fate was doomed the day you were born. Sold out by one of yours; Your tears never seized to dry. A foreign tongue you were forced to endure. A way of tyranny you never knew Beheld your being was, worse than death itself. We haven’t forgotten. Queen Mother Yaa Asantewaa: Your bravery meritorious. An army of struggle you had. An amount of time you were in glory. A seed you planted, easily dispelled. Disposed from your own soil. For a cause worthy. A death of shame you encountered. We haven’t forgotten. Queen Nanny: An uncanny name that was. Betrothed from your own land. Holding the heaviness of your heart you toiled. Change? You channeled your fears to win. Refuge you offered in a land, foreign. A culture you were forced to create. Nevertheless you fought a good war. We haven’t forgotten. Carlota Lukumi: For a shilling you were taken as a child. To smear the buttocks of those; Whose hands were too precious to travail. Your voice was supressed to bark anger. The drums of your motherland dawned your eardrums. Your hands traversed for an uprising. Like a savage dog, they tortured you to your grave. We haven’t forgotten. Nehanda, Nyakasikana: For decades you lived for counsel. A counsel for those weary and depressed. But a war you never perceived. Brought about the doom of a country. You readied our chiefs for a war lost. A war that led to the demise of a great counsel We haven’t forgotten. Vesta Sithole: Our unsung heroine. Reverend Ndabaningi Sithole Our unsung Hero. You gathered a nation’s party, for change. Went beyond boarders. Belief of freedom in our own land you thrived. No tribe should be made elite ahead of another, you preached. We haven’t forgotten. We haven’t forgotten. Our roots are bared deep in our heads. Ida B. Wells once said: “The way to right wrongs, Is to turn the light of truth’ Upon them” Our generations will be forever reminded. Our Grandchildren will know. Our unsung heroes. We thank you for the truth you raised. Our minds are full of songs you praised. Like loyal dogs we will forever bow. Our heritage is in our roots. The will of humanity lies in the very soil you toiled. Our hearts will forever reciprocate the hurt. And forever enjoy the happiness. We haven’t forgotten. © Herzel Poshiwa
