A Black Woman Slave's Lord's Prayer
We can’t see God Almighty ‘cause he lives in Heaven high but we can see Jesus the Lord ‘cause he’s the our kind of man, though some people say he’s the Son of God, yet mindless mobs mocked him ‘cause he looked most ordinary. His nature is compassionate and that’s why he walks with me as my friend, that means God’s glory came upon us as flesh and dwells in us. If I collapse on a cotton field from heavy labor more than I can bear, Jesus comes and lifts me up, and when my toe bleeds from a stone I tripped over in the field, Jesus holds it to stop bleeding. But then, how to heal my heart’s wound; O this damned summer’s scorching sun. After barely finishing a day’s work at the field, and when I come to my cabin dragging this worn out body, the return for my long day’s hard labor is not more than a quart of corn. I grind, pat and cook them ‘cause I must eat to sustain myself, I gobble them with tears but my stomach is not filled to full. And that’s why all sorts of worldly thoughts torment me when I lie down on a straw bunk and dream a dream of unwanted dreams, O Lord mercy on me, help me overcome every matter, whether it’s good or bad, as you endured your share on the cross. Occasionally I curse the world that inflicts pain on me and my inhumane master who tortures me, but neither world nor my master changed for good to lessen my load. So, whatever circumstances it may be, it’s all right now my Lord, if you just give me an understanding heart to accept the world as it is and forgive my master who doesn’t know what he’s doing, rather, O my merciful Lord, forgive my sins and surely don’t condemn the world, let me look at you on the cross tearing for me and keep in mind to never let evil rule over me. O Jesus my Lord, deeply I trust on you. Don’t delay but come quickly on this earth as you promised. This time not as an ordinary person but as a mighty ruler the glorious king to reign over this world forever with love in eternal peace.
