The Walk
The Walk If you could look into my eyes. I know what you would see. You would see my very heart. Looking out at you from me. From a distance I’m no different. Than anyone else you know. But if you were to come closer. There is much more here to show. We could chat for hours on end. Or call on the phone and talk. But if you could step inside me. I’d take you for a walk. You see those mountains over there. I’ve climbed them all but one. But I still hope to master it. Before my life is done. Up there in the rocks you see. The bones of dragons I have slain. I fought with everything I had. Until not one of them remain. Along this muddy river. Are the shells of bridges I have burned. Inside this old tattered book. Are the lessons I have learned. This river we are standing near. That looks so deep and wide. Its not made of rain from heaven. It’s made from tears I cried. The mansion on that hill right there. On its door you’ll find my name. No one lives there anymore. That’s my house of shame. On down this road a little ways. Will put a smile on your face. Because right around the corner. You’ll see my happy place. It’s filled with all the things I’ve done. That made somebody smile. If you start getting tired. We could rest here for awhile. Though there’s more much more to see. You’re welcome here anytime. We can come back later. Perhaps some other rhyme. You see that bright light shining. We’re not quite finished yet. That light’s the smile you gave me. The first moment that we met. It helps me weather every storm. With wind and rain unfurled. So what your smile does for me. Is it lights up my whole world. Edwin C Hofert.
