Four Days of Mourning An Empty Promise
She was late, this was major He had diarised the date for good measure Said to return for the announcement The cold cement in the waiting room numbing her feet They both couldn’t wait for the news of joy Instead, a bold statement meant to destroy Truth hurts, foregoing reality Dedicating her mind instead to fantasy Day one, Eyes slowly open Peering out the window Temple still in her tear-soaked pillow Sunlight sneaking through the curtains To dry her cheeks and warm her quivers Day two, He was getting annoyed too Worried for her, but he thought, ‘it was just a foetus?!’ Acting as though immune to loss To the heavy demands of a life denied To a future projection only imagined Mother came To stop the crying shame Day three, She gave her the acceptance necessary to be free Between the aches and sores, still sobbing constantly Sleeping periodically, now eating occasionally Day four, boldly, she stepped out of the bedroom door
