With This Ring
The centre of the wedding ring has seen some of the greatest fights Set off by the wedding bells Shiny and sparkling, its aesthetics deceiving By invitation only, The contestants are lovers, often newlyweds Candidates for eternal love and happiness But finding only bitterness Insecurity, jealousy, pride, ego and masculinity encircles the ring Culture, infidelity, entangles the ring Unforgiveness, doubt and resentment are all inscribed above On a magic carpet ride into a spiral downward dive A holy battle of the sexes It doesn’t have any, but the families can be found in their corners The gloves are off...cheap shots and elbows There are no rules, no referee...low blows, Anything goes The ring is the price of ‘love’ proudly worn Bringing doubt to what’s already won The bouts are designed to test its dexterity ‘Fools rush in’ to divorce their opposite stupidity The ring symbolising an unbreakable, everlasting relationship Often loses its sentimental value, to end up at a pawnshop Or on the other ring finger, a mere fashion accessory of dull memory An expensive piece jewellery of unholy matrimony ‘for better or worse till death do us part’
