I walked with friends, but occasionally alone, In bare feet I felt the pain of every stone. It was during the summer of ’43, Going home I would play in every tree. I had just celebrated birthday number eight, There is no way I will forget that date. We heard the army was coming our way, Boy, we kids thought they were here to stay. We soon realized they were here to train, Preparing to go get Hitler in countries like Spain. This was called maneuvers during World War Two, Our red arm band soldiers were tracking down the blue. During chow we met with the soldiers that night, We did not realize that these men had to fight. One soldier’s rifle I was allowed to hold, It was loaded with blanks, we were told. I fired accidentally, the shot rang true, The soldiers scattered quickly without asking who. ©2008 Lynn B Glover
