Around the Corner
Around The Corner We would sit on the street corner playing a guessing game “who or what will come around the corner next?” The suspense would build. A shadow would creep slowly disappearing into a mystery. “I wonder who it was?” “Where’d they go?” Sometimes it was a fire truck. Sirens blaring, bell clanging, we would rise and race the truck up the short street not knowing what might be waiting for the firemen around the corner. Boredom would bring us back to the corner - to the game. With age, the game would change, the corners and what approached more challenging. Life kept coming around the corner. Sometimes we would rise and chase it - other times we watched it pass - a stranger. The shadows seem more threatening now, their approach less anticipated, the game less fun when played alone. Yet even now, as it did then one shadow, one sound, still causes a surge of childish joy. The rumbling shadow of the Ice Cream truck. The line of children of all ages, and the absolute trust held by the never changing taste of the Creamsicle. John G. Lawless 10/9/2014 submitted to Francine Roberts Around the corner - Poetry Contest
