How Can I Be Happy
How can I be happy when in spirit I am poor? Where is joy and gladness when grief I must endure? How can I be happy when by strong I am refused? Where is laughter when by wicked I am abused? How can I be happy when injustice makes me groan? Where is hope and peace when hatred for me is shown? How can I be happy when morals are decried? Where is health and wholeness when kindness is denied? Shall I claim happiness while in my earthly dress? Can my life find meaning? Must I be plagued with stress? Can someone help me focus? Please help me place my aim. So that in life’s journey, fulfillment I can claim. The answer is in a sermon preached on a hill. By a simple carpenter whose words abide still. There He does acknowledge the world is one big mess. But if we crave what is right, God our life will bless. Comfort is not promised, trouble will come our way. We will face many battles in our worldly stay. Yet if our response to hurt is kindness and love, God will grant mercy and happiness from above. Poverty may hover, its grip might never cease. Hate dares to continue, threats of war increase. Yet earth we’ll inherit, we’re the meek who’ll possess. It belongs to our Father, God whom we confess. So I’ll try to be content, in my earthly stay. And survey the blessings scattered along the way. For happiness is not perched at life’s altitude. Its station is discovered with my attitude.
