Silence
I listened to the silence one sleepless night, And it revealed some disconcerting facts. It said I was wrong to suppose I was right About an alarming number of my acts. It wasted no words to scold me directly For thinking the worst of a troubled friend. “Without all the facts, you judge incorrectly.” I thrashed, knowing I had fences to mend. The silence had even bolder claims to make, Pointing out I had been uncivil to my wife. “Don’t you know you make her heart ache?” I had to admit I had caused her untold strife. It was almost time to get ready for work, But silence had one more charge to raise. “You filed your tax returns with a sly smirk.” It was true; I was past due to mend my ways. Silence has a way of cutting to the quick— Of airing what is hidden when voiced aloud. It shouts out every subterfuge and trick; If we listen, our honesty will be endowed.
