King of the World
Saw an old beggar with cup in hand Pleading for coins ragged old man Bald and toothless sight all but gone Dropped him a coin he told his song Once I was powerful and ruled the land Anything I desired was at my command Gorged on feast wine women and song I was King of the World to me it belonged I lived in palaces and ruled the World Life and death at my finger's twirl Every decision I utter from my lips In scrolls great scholars dutifully kept I wore robes woven of the finest gold Legends and songs of me were told Masses adored me treasures piled to the sky Great statues of me were mountain high Listening of tales from one ruined and humbled The arrogance he spoked made truth crumble He rattled his cup pathetic and sad Apologizing it was the only coin I had I left the old soul on the corner street Never staying to learn of his defeat But if life leaves you down and awhirl Why not believe your King of the World.
