I Did It My Way
People see reporters as antagonists Always seeking the “Dirty Laundry” But I assure you a different type exists My tactics left others in a quandary For I’d found a way to “catch more flies” By approaching with a gentler demeanor I often saw others not as foes, but allies As I sought the truth, it created an uproar The House Speaker agreed to meet privately Each Friday morning, we spoke one-on-one The Governor opened his door to me As other reporters were locked out and shunned Using “honey,” you will gain far more trust Even in times when crises abound Perhaps others should allow attitudes to adjust Many scoops I acquired in the method I found Written June 18, 2014 *When our state resumed executions, other reporters were outside the Capitol, trying to get photos through a window of the governor at his desk. I simply knocked on the governor’s door and his press secretary let me sit inside with the governor. When you are perceived as an obnoxious threat, people shut you out. “Dirty Laundry” is a song by Don Henley about reporters.
