Two Loves Had I
Two Loves Had I two loves had I just two they ended badly, though I loved them madly I dare not seek a third these love bringers caused pain that lingers I’d not survive another they had the power to rise before my eyes welcomed to God’s kingdom while my spirits fell, I was condemned to a hell of my vulnerability’s creation *My poem is primarily free verse with four internal rhymes. Written June 7, 2014 Based on “My Life Closed Twice,” a rhyme by Emily Dickinson. The last two lines of this poem have been carried in my memory since high school and, ironically, I feel Emily’s path in life and mine later proved to be quite similar. The following is her poem: My Life Closed Twice By Emily Dickinson My life closed twice before its close It yet remains to see If immortality unveils a third event to me So huge, so hopeless to conceive As these that twice befell For parting is all we know of heaven And all we need of hell
