Zaphnathpaaneah (Part Ii)
(The Mockery) Come lie with me, For none is within the house but me and thee. I take hold of thine garment, So draw near to me and kiss me. No! I will flee fornication and get me out! Ha! Ha! Ha! Thinkest thou hast behaved thyself wisely? Thy garment is within my hand. Men! Men! Potiphar has brought an Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, But I cried with a loud voice, and he ran out. Yet, his garment he left with me, Until his lord come home. Oh Potiphar! My Potiphar! The Hebrew servant which thou hast brought to us Cam in unto me to mock me: And I lifted up my voice and cried, That he left his garment with me And he fled out. (His Lord's Reply) Joseph! Joseph! I take thee to be put with the King's prisoners, For my wrath is kindled against thee. O my Lord show me thy mercy, For I have behaved myself wisely. Verily, thou hast behaved thyself wisely, For thou didst flee fornication and got you out. Though she spake to thee day by day You hearkened not unto her; neither did thy heart decline To lie by her, or to be with her. You lusted not after her beauty, Nor were you taken by the eyelids of her brazen face. For she is an adulteress woman, Who eateth bread and wipeth her mouth And says, I have done nothing. She hath cast down many wounded; Yea, many strong men have been slain by her. Her house is Hell Going down to the chambers of death; But thou hast hearkened diligently unto My voice. Whatever you do I will make it to prosper, For I am with thee To show you mercy and give you favor, For thou, indeed, behavedst thyself wisely.
