Miserable Stump Am I
Miserable Stump Am I What a fine morning it was.... With an axe I saw him come One, two, three trees he passed Before fixing gaze on me. The menacing axe so bright.... By the way he removed it From his shoulder, I could see The thing was pretty heavy. He spat on his grisly palms Before the thing he swung The blade fell Full Square As again and again he struck. Blood oozed from dumb me Swayed by the heavy blows While he contorted ugly face To propel more deadly blows. * A racy bird wishing to rest Or on the branches to nest Under the paralysing fright Past, she zoomed in flight. Squirrel out of the burrow Left family in the hollow Dragged in the severed trunk Giddy in the wicked bunk! When I creaked and slanted Humanity was not enchanted. When Dust rose as I fell Raised was the death knell! Then I saw some smoke rise In Town one cold sunrise Someone warming his desire On a dead tree on a fire- Possibly sitting on a table Legislator in idle warble On which he is a master Environs Laws to filibuster! * Never again did I see this man Is he dead by oxygen starvation Bereft by greens that he killed And the trunk that bore them? A moment of silence therefore In honour of the fallen Tree And a moment of breathlessness To save oxygen thus depleted!!! **Deforestation is a problem we must all curtail. JM 22nd Oct’ 2013
