Keeping On
He tossed the ball gently to his one and only son, Taught him all the rules and he showed him how to run. "Don't matter if you win or lose, I don't really care, As long as you play the game and that you play it fair." She wrote the letters down on a board that's painted black, Read them with the students in a one room country shack. Some could be leaders and she'd remember each ones name; Maybe one or two of them for her will do the same. For all the years that have passed us by And for whatever's still to come, We will keep on teaching 'till it's over and it's done. Rise up in the morning with a family to feed. Never been that easy to give 'em what they need When you're struggling day to day against a raging storm, Still you do all you can do to keep them safe and warm. Someone raised up a flag and saluted it once more. Said it stood for country and that's worth dying for. Some fought on beaches, others high above the sea; Too many had been left behind but we are standing free. For all the years that have passed us by And for whatever's still to come, We will keep on fighting 'till it's over and it's done. He turned left at the corner and ambled down the street, Should have seen him shuffling on those poor ageing feet. Crossed the busy highway and then the railway track, Not once did he turn around 'cause he's never coming back. She charged up the battery and checked through all the gears, Said to her children "could be gone for many years". She aimed her motored chair down the tree-lined avenue, Headed off to see the world from a diff'rent point of view. For all the years that have passed us by And for whatever's still to come, We will keep on moving 'till it's over and it's done. Yeah, we will keep on moving ‘till it’s over and it’s done.
