The Day She Cut Her Hair
THE DAY SHE CUT HER HAIR Puzzle pieces snapped to make the night Children slept She inhaled intoxicating silence white Mint tasting Slight hand captured brush of crested silver Handed down Attacked her red head til it quivered Smiling now Adored man impatient---flicked eagle gaze Cruelty based Her Guts roared danger--'tis the end of days “Cut it off” he challenged power dare She looked down Sole pride lingered –precious waist-kissed hair Took a vow He will leave me now if I refuse Children cry Only one thing that she could choose Nodded head He dressed quickly and hit the door Her eyes closed She had dreamed this scene and knew the score Sat there brushing til the break of day Sun came up Found her scissors and she snipped away Hair fell down Wept in silence as she made her plan Kids woke up Clearly needed a life without this man Swept the floor Started singing to perk up her day Breakfast time Kids to feed and get them on their way Victoria Anderson-Throop December 1, 2012 Juja, Kenya Africa
