Child of Battle
There once was a man who told me, “I’m taking you to die,” So I packed up my army boots And watched my mother cry. She closed her eyes and kissed my cheek, All I could do was smile I waved goodbye and said to her “I’ll see you in a while.” We walked until we stepped in blood. The war had just begun. The officer left me alone, I loaded up my gun. The older men looked down at me And rolled their bloodshot eyes. They had a can of beer in hand. Courage was their disguise. I found a boy who was my age And similar in height. We camouflaged ourselves in green And set out in the night. The darkness fell just like a shield. We hid behind a tree. Gun shells were splayed as far as grass, The air was hard to breathe. The hoots of owls and yells of death, The smell of rotting flesh Men lying still with mouths ajar My mind, the scene was sketched They found us there, shaking in fear Pulled out their gleaming knives My friend leapt up and hit the men For me, he gave his life. I heard his breath come out in wisps And silence scraped the dirt I ran until I hit the lake, Sweat dripping down my shirt. The sky began to shake and break And then the bombs were shed. I pressed my fingers to my cheek To catch the tears that bled I shook the drops into the soil Before the noises burst. The clouds puffed up and limbs flew past God’s seen me at my worst.
