An Old Man's Knee
"Great-granddad," the little girl asked, As she sat on the old man's knee, "Can you remember long ago, When you was as big as me?" The old man gently laid a hand On his great-granddaughters head. He cleared his throat and nodded, And tried not to laugh when he said: "Oh, I somehow still remember Sitting on my grandpa's lap, And he'd tell me of the olden days When he was just a little chap. "And in my book of memories, When I turn to another page, I see your grandma on my knee, When she was only about your age. "There is yet another little girl Who means the world to me; Your mommy spent her share of time Upon her granddad's knee." The little girl hugged her great-granddad, And patted his hair, so soft and gray. Then, she quickly slid down off his knee, And waved, as she hurried outside to play.
