Destiny
It’s time to say good bye sly maid It’s futile and hopeless to regret you; Neither faith nor memories give their aid But pride will help me to forget you. For all these frivolous squandered years The weary times of fading pleasures; Your many loves, my ancient fears The selfish songs of passion’s treasures. Had my destiny been joined with you As at one time it appeared a token; This folly would never have been true And my heart would not have been broken. In times past my soul like yours was pure And all its soaring passions would smother; Now your promises no longer endure You gave them to another. Although now I look for other joys For to see you would give me madness; Alone among the crowds and hollow noise I would concede to my heart’s sadness. At this time a thought would reveal The sorrow in spite of hopeless endeavor; My adversary might console all I feel But I know you are gone from me forever.
