Temptation
In the darkness of midnight and terror, When I toss and turn in my bed; With tears and a memory of error, On a pathway of sin I have fled. In my mind there are visions I'd banish, The truths of the deeds I have done; For I beg and ask that they vanish, And they vanish, all except one. That one with a sigh like the splendor, Of the moon in the midnight skies; That one with a magic so tender, That one with a trance in his eyes. He comes close in his loving beauty, With languid, indolent grace; And my heart won't do its duty, When I look at the light in his face. He caresses my face and I quiver, And tremble with exquisite pains; He sighs like the wind on the river, And blood rushes fast through my veins. He half smiles in amorous fashion, And kisses with soft tender touch; He holds me with power and passion, In his arms I love him so much. Oh phantom of sad unrelenting, Fly back to the darkness and sod; Always too dear for repenting, Yet standing between me and my God. If in a dream I should meet him, And kiss those lips I love well; So dear in my arms I would greet him, And melt in the fires of hell.
