It Would Be Nice
IT WOULD BE NICE Click heels and choose? Ok It would be nice if I could be in the house of my son when he’s my age And celebrate how he’s succeeded better than me And see him happy with his life’s progress And see him happy with his wife - like me With his own grown-up children. . . . Yes, I’d like to be there when his ship has finally come in to port. I’d like to know did he ever really understand or know me? Does he remember me like I remember my mum? Does he miss me or wish he could see me? Does he ever talk to his children about me? Yes, it would be nice ; but I would much prefer to be There when he’s in difficulty and has nowhere to turn; When he’s down to the last gasping penny; When no one listens, and all are too busy. To help avoid the accident, not to help after it; To see around the corner ahead of him Before he stumbles on the path; To remove the broken glass before he treads. To be a useful part of the process; not a decorative Addition to a final celebration. Rounds of applause and flash-cameras hold No interest for me. My preferred spot Is between him and trouble, and when that job is done, Send me quickly to the next job. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . .. . . . .. . .
