The Very Last Tree
a relic among the towering rods of industrial steel and iron shod it weeps forever in the dying day for the lost abandoned way twilight gives no warmth no ray of sunlight pierces the north clouds of inky black sin was the gift born from Men Its brothers and fathers have all fell and no one cares to hear the story it can tell it just stands there atop the hill for an ax to make the kill so lonely there on its deathbed perch it wonders if this is what it has found at the end of its search: To all whom a forgotten life has led that they have always already been dead No one cares or hears its cry underneath this scorched umbrella sky it was once life itself to these things but industry's tool is all that sings only one question asks this last lonely tree "Why have you all deserted me?"
