I Had a Dream
I had a dream yestreen: There was darkness' and light's, And I stood between; To the side of light I looked with a sigh, There men spent ineffable rights, by and by. There love was a sea, and virtue was virgin, Thus I tell and believe me, I was compelled to go in; In a mansion of pure golds, where pence ever smell, They welcome lords, and I rich I got as well. Peace I found long and wide, faith I met even, Abysmal never betide, those confess are forgiven; With elation profound, now I walked like mighty, On this humble ground, on the land of light. There respect roams around, for the old, by the young, There birds knit melodies aloud, only beautiful and earlier unsung; Nothing there at once relents, even the ants of soil, His vowed great intent, to make some content boil. A people of looks fair, God's honor and rare, And wisdom enough and spare is a source-gown they wear; Where noble judges reign, and honor to souls prevail, And every mind is sane, and none ever wail. Now I hold my money to count, the much I may have earned, Hoping for a great amount, as I have ever yearned; But I feel I hold a lump, some like no pence, Deftly I light a lamp, and watch linen with diffidence. And thus I sit disconcerted, then, to visualize the vision I contemplate, How I become positive hearted and idleness hate! Set to curve a history might, silver and gold to mine, Appetite for sophistry right, on virtue to dine and wine.
