The Grey Area
I saw the tears in her eyes, Not because she was crying, But an imprint, From a hundred cries before. A single mom, Doing the best she could, But she was far, From evening life's score. Her speech was slurred, Probably from, One too many drinks, Drowning her sorrows away. I almost, Overlooked her completely, Cause I couldn't, Understand the words she had to say. I could of ignored her, Told her, She wasn't welcome, Cause I had no time to waste But she had with her, Her son, Who despite being a bit embarrassed, Did his best to explain her case. So I decided to hear her out, And despite my skeptic thoughts, I decided, To give her a chance. Something about her appearance, Told me she needed a break, From people telling her, There excuses for can'ts The next month, She came back, Bright an early, Ready to honor our deal, I was encouraged, Thinking how misleading, Prejudices were, From that which is real. Here she was, A good mom, Just trying to give, Her son something better, And I almost, Made her life harder, By believing my misconceptions, To the letter. I learned a valuable lesson, That day You can't judge a book, By it's cover. And sometimes, It's hard to tell the difference, From a fall down drunk, And an ill fortuned good mother.
