Critters
I got up this morning with the sun, Knowing that this day would soon be done. But I had a few things to do in between, Like feed the birds, the squirrels, and chipmunks thru the screen. I have always wondered why they come around, Every morning with their flutters or jumps abound. I hear the birds sing sweetly to me, Now, even the squirrels are not afraid if food they see. The chipmunks on the other hand, Are critters who jump, run, bounce, and stand. They hide from me when'er they can, Think I'm an ogre, instead of a man. They dig holes and burrows 'neath my patio too, All this because I feed them, which sometimes I rue. If you recall Chip 'n Dale, you'll have some idea of the two I see, Eating up the bird seed, the rice, the peanuts, and even my fruit trees. Like Donald Duck I want to Quack, I just hope that they don't cause the foundation to crack. They scatter the birds to get at the seed, Then jump on the feeder for more...yes indeed! I have even thought of trapping the little beggers back there, But then what would I do with them, put them somewhere? They'd only come back with abandon in their will, These two little pesky rodents, sometimes I could kill. At one time I probably would have tried to do so, Not any more, as over the years I began to mellow. But I do let them know my displeasure at their theft, Especially of the wild birdseed I have left. For some poor bird always gets less food, Because of these pests, and that isn't good. And they eat and eat and eat all day long, Without getting bigger, or faster, or even more strong. But they are God's creatures and he made them for a reason, I only wish that I didn't have to see them in summer's season. So, I'll go on feeding the critters because they get hungry, I only hope that I can keep myself from getting angry.
