By the Well
Twas an ordinary scene On an ordinary day She an ordinary woman On her ordinary way Doing work of little consequence She walked to Jacob’s well Never knowing that in future day The world would know her tale For as she drew to fill her pot A man she noticed there Who were he any other Jew Wouldst not have shown her care But instead he bid her, “Dip the cup And give me thence to drink” Leaving her to wonder why He did not think as others think For her home was of Samaria And her people often shunned But in quiet voice he spoke to her And soon her trust he won For he told her all the things that In her life she ever did And he spoke of living waters Offering unto her this bid That if she would partake of such She’d never thirst again So she asked him “Give me thus that I might also worship then” But the man looked in her eyes and spoke A phrase to stand all time “Ye worship that ye know not what”… A daunting truth sublime For every living soul Must also face this fact as they Grow from adolescent innocence Into life to make their way With the charge to every man That ‘Life Eternal is to know’ The one true God who dwells on high Yet we dwell here below With no way to see his face Or touch his hand or hear his voice So it seems that every soul Must someday come to make the choice Will we heed His invitation: “Plant the seed of faith and try” All the words that have been given Of the prophets by and by And see if not the tree doth grow By study and by prayer And your load of burdens lightened Casting on Him every care And so I write to ask myself As well as each of you Do we know of what you worship Do we know the God that’s true For the sands of time are running thin That day is at the door When we’ll see him face to face… And face our answer evermore
